Pattern Recognition — seeing the rule before you see the answer

Pattern recognition is the ability to see the regularity in a series of shapes and predict what comes next. A pattern recognition question shows a sequence of figures arranged by a hidden rule; you infer the rule and choose the figure that continues it. The skill combines visual perception with inductive logic — noticing what repeats, what changes, and how it changes. Recognizing patterns is one of the fundamental ways people make sense of new information. LEVO measures pattern recognition as a scored section in both of its full-length IQ tests and trains it with a dedicated category in your daily training sessions.

What it is

Pattern detectionInductive logicVisual sequences

Pattern recognition sits between seeing and reasoning. Each question is a short visual argument: a series of figures changes step by step according to a rule — a rotation, a count, an alternation, a growth — and the correct answer is whatever that rule produces next. Getting it right means separating the signal from the decoration: which properties of the figures matter, and which are noise. That is inductive logic applied to what you see, and it is why this section quantifies visual intelligence rather than visual acuity — the shapes are easy to see; the regularity behind them is the puzzle.

Pattern recognition differs from matrix reasoning in shape: matrices ask you to satisfy rules across a grid at once, while pattern questions ask you to project a rule forward along a sequence. LEVO scores them separately, so your report shows each on its own axis.

How LEVO measures it

  • IQ Test 1 — 8 pattern recognition questions.
  • Post-training IQ test — 8 questions, separate question set.
  • Tests 3–5 do not include this category (they are matrix-only).

How LEVO trains it

One of the seven daily training categories: each daily session includes 6 pattern recognition questions from a practice pool of 94 exercises, with feedback after every answer. The training questions are the same type the tests score, so the practice is direct. Daily practice sharpens the specific skill — spotting visual rules faster and more reliably — and the post-training test measures exactly that change.

Questions & answers

What is pattern recognition in an IQ test?

It is a section that shows sequences of figures arranged by a hidden rule and asks which figure comes next. It measures inductive logic applied to visual information. In LEVO, pattern recognition is an 8-question section in both full-length IQ tests and one of the seven daily training categories.

How is pattern recognition different from matrix reasoning?

Both are non-verbal rule-finding, but the format differs: matrix reasoning asks you to complete a grid whose rules run across rows and columns simultaneously, while pattern recognition asks you to continue a sequence whose rule unfolds step by step. LEVO measures and reports the two separately.

Can I improve my pattern recognition?

You can improve at the task: regular practice makes you faster and more accurate at spotting visual rules, and LEVO's daily sessions are built for exactly that. Broader effects beyond the practiced skill are not something the research supports claiming — so LEVO measures your change with a baseline test and a separate retest instead of promising transfer.
